Design and Build
The specification sheet states that the Gemm mod is made out of Zinc Alloy, but I would question this, as to keep it feels like it is made out of plastic, unless it has a Zinc Alloy chassis underneath the plastic exterior. And considering it has a 1300mAh battery installed, it literally floats in your hand, and you hardly know you are holding it.
The Mod section of the kit has a unique look and feel to it. With the design team going for squared off design. Which feels comfy in the hand, and of cause won’t roll off your desk.
It’s nice that FREEMAX have gone for a traditional mod and tank design, joined together with a standardised 510 connection. The 510 connection is set in a stainless steel surround, with a cross section engraved into it, which is purely for looks and has no function, the connection it’s self is held in place with two recessed Philips head screws,
The two sides of the Mod have slanted waves lines running down the sides, which gives a nice level of grip, and adds to the overall design of the body.
The back of the device has a dark plastic insert on it, with an Inca style, tribal design, with Gem logo, strangely with only one ‘M’ the design is ok, and it sort of breaks up the single colour design.
The base of the Gemm mod has all the standard info on the base with the website for FREEMAX Vape, and FREEMAX branding. And Made by FREEMAX, not sure you need to have it on there 3 times, being picky, but I would either have the web address, the logo, or made by FREEMAX, but not all three, just looked a bit cluttered.
Functions and Controls
The Gemm Pod is super easy to control and use, with only one button to press, with multiple functions. Press the fire button five times to turn the device on and off
The Gemm Pod Kit has three power settings, to give you more choice, and to allow you to fine tune your Vaping experience, with out over complicating it, with menus and such like, so definitely suited to the newer user, just making the switch up to a variable wattage device.
Pressing the fire button ‘3 Times’ will cycle through the three power settings, each level indicated by the changing of the illuminated ‘Watts’ on the face of the device.
Ranging from 12watts to 25watts. This wattage adjustment is also required when choosing your preferred pod / tank. Which we will get to later.
To make it easier for the newer user, and to ensure the device runs as designed, the mod automatically reads the required wattage settings depending on which coil is used. So for example the device will fire to 25W at the maximum output for the DTL coil and will only fire to 15W at the maximum output for the MTL coil.
As well as the predetermined wattage settings the Gemm Pod Kit also has the following safety features and protection built in.
- Low resistance
- Low Voltage
- Short circuit
- High Temperature
- Open circuit
Whilst the power / fire button is pressed the coil will begin to fire, along with the selected wattage displaying, it will also display your remaining battery level, rounded to the nearest 25%. Changing from 100% whilst fully charged, to 75%, 50% and lastly 25% which indicates that your device will need charging,
When it comes to charging, you can simply plug in the supplied USB cable, to a suitable power brick, and allow the battery to charge, as with all Vaping devices, you shouldn’t charge over night, or leave it unattended.
The socket for the USB, hasn’t been machine very well, and does a bit of a sharp edge to it, which you can feel if you run your finger over it.
Pod Design
The design of the Pod is well, more of a tank, than a pod. Not sure what defines a tank, over a pod. Perhaps it’s the fact that the pod/tank of the Gemm, is single use, and the coils can’t be replaced, Single use is a bit misleading, as FREEMAX state on their website that the Tank/pod can be used and refilled over 20 times, before the flavour becomes effected, and becomes more unstable. Personally I haven’t refilled mine 20 times yet, and this information is based on 120 day lad testing at FREEMAX HQ.With the Pod Style tank, you have the benefit of not having to fiddle around with changing coils out, getting ejuice all over your fingers, and you literally unscrew the tank and throw it away, when the flavour starts to get a bit funky. Not particularly ‘Green’ in this time of reducing single use plastics, but I suppose it’s not really single use, if you can refill it 20 times. It always seems such a shame to have to throw away such a nice looking tank, it just feels a bit wrong.
The Gemm Kit comes with a choice of two Pods/Tanks, allowing you to try out both style of Vaping, before you have to order replacements,
Gem Pod DTL 0.5ohm (Direct To Lung) which has a loser more wide open draw.
Heating Material : Military Grade SS904L Mesh Coil
Wicking Material : Tea Fibre Cotton
Power Range : 15 to 25w
Recommend Power : 20w
Recommend E-Juice : Freebase
Gem Pod MTL 0.5ohm (Mouth To Lung) which has a tighter draw, with less air-flow
Heating Material : Military Grade SS904L Mesh Coil
Wicking Material : Tea Fibre Cotton
Power Range : 12w to 15w
Recommend Power : 14w
Recommend E-Juice : Nicotine Salts (Nic Salts)
The pod / tanks have been manufactured out of clear plastic, with the coils being press fitted into the base, preventing any form of leakage,
The Gem Pod also offers you fully adjustable airflow, with is delivered through the single large air slot. Which is located on one side, and is adjusted by simply rotating the airflow ring. Which allows you to adjust from wide open to nice and tight, it also features a stopper on when end, so you can’t go to far.
The Pods can be filled by simply pulling up the rubber bung, with your nail, to reveal the fill port. Which I must admit is a little small.
How the Gemm Podkit performs.
I have been Vaping on the Gemm Pod for the last few weeks, trying out different juices and the varying power setting, and both the MTL and The DTL Pods, I was quite in well how well they both performed, the MTL pod performed better with the flow shut right down.
Soft Setting - Red gave quite a subdued Vaping experience, with quite a muted level of flavour, with very little throat hit.
Medium Setting - Blue seemed to have a bit more of a kick to the flavour, and allowed the full flavour profile to come through, delivering a more satisfying amount of throat hit and vapor.
Hard Setting - Green allowed, in my opinion the full flavour of the juice to come through, allowing both the high notes, and low undertones to come through, really popping on the tongue, with the required throat hit, and a decent amount of vapor from such a small device.
These are just my opinions, and that is the beauty of a device with variable wattage. You can tune it to your preferred profile.
The battery seemed to last well throughout the day, and it was nice to have a clear display of the remaining charge, so you know you have enough charge for popping out the door, there were no issues with leakage, and the sealed all in one pod seemed to keep the juice safely in side.
Final thoughts on the FREEMAX Gemm Pod Kit
I have been quite impressed with this little kit. And it performed really well, I grew quite attached to the MTL Pod, filled with some of my fav. Nic Salt Juice. And will be definitely recommending the Gemm Pod Kit to some of my friends looking for a more advanced pod kit, to get off the fags, over to more up from the more basic Pods on the market.
Pros
- Incredibly lightweight kit.
- Easy adjustments, with clear display.
- Battery life that lasts all day.
- Very easy to fill, and easy to see how much ejuice you have left.
- No leaking at all
- Offers both MTL and DTL Pods.
Cons
- The airflow on the MTL pod is a little to loose and open.
- Would have liked the icons on the display to be a bit bigger.
- The finish around the USB not great,
- Would have liked a bung in the USB to stop it filling up with lint.
- Would have liked a top cap, that could be fitted when carrying in bag or pocket.
